Subduction Initiation at the Solomon Back?Arc Basin: Contributions From Both Island Arc Rheological Strength and Oceanic Plateau Collision
نویسندگان
چکیده
It is generally accepted that the subduction polarity reversal (SPR) results from strong collision of two plates. Yet, SPR Solomon Back-arc Basin started in “soft docking” stage, and mechanism by which induced initiation (SI) remains elusive. We find mass depletion plateau influences evolution patterns during SI. And island arc rheological strength affects development shear zone between an back-arc basin favors What's more, with increase difference, SI more easily to occur, contribution weakens. Hence, combining available geological evidence, we suggest Island Arc Ontong-Java jointly controlled stage.

Subduction of the oceanic Hikurangi Plateau and its impact on the Kermadec arc.
Large igneous province subduction is a rare process on Earth. A modern example is the subduction of the oceanic Hikurangi Plateau beneath the southern Kermadec arc, offshore New Zealand. This segment of the arc has the largest total lava volume erupted and the highest volcano density of the entire Kermadec arc. Here we show that Kermadec arc lavas south of ~32°S have elevated Pb and Sr and low ...
متن کاملReaction-induced rheological weakening enables oceanic plate subduction
Earth is the only terrestrial planet in our solar system where an oceanic plate subducts beneath an overriding plate. Although the initiation of plate subduction requires extremely weak boundaries between strong plates, the way in which oceanic mantle rheologically weakens remains unknown. Here we show that shear-enhanced hydration reactions contribute to the generation and maintenance of weak ...
متن کاملOrigin of depleted basalts during subduction initiation and early development of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Island arc: Evidence from IODP Expedition 351 Site U1438, Amami-Sankaku Basin
The Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) island arc formed following initiation of subduction of the Pacific plate beneath the Philippine Sea plate at about 52 Ma. Site U1438 of IODP Expedition 351 was drilled to sample the oceanic basement on which the IBM arc was constructed, to better understand magmatism prior to and during the subduction initiation event. Site U1438 igneous basement Unit 1 (150 m) was ...

The Ophiolite Terrane of the Southern Chewore Inliers is comprised of two related, but lithologicallyand geochemically-distinct groups. The Maunde Ophiolite Group comprises a suite of lithologies similar to those within Phanerozoic ophiolites. The Kaourera Island Arc Group contains a suite of silica-variable, extrusive lithologies similar to those within present-day island-arcs. Geochemical ana...
متن کاملSubduction initiation at relic arcs
Although plate tectonics is well established, how a new subduction zone initiates remains controversial. Based on plate reconstruction and recent ocean drilling within the Izu-Bonin-Mariana, we advance a new geodynamic model of subduction initiation (SI). We argue that the close juxtaposition of the nascent plate boundary with relic oceanic arcs is a key factor localizing initiation of this new...
